INTERIOR RECOLORING WITH “FADE AWAY” FROM JUST DASHES

By Jim McGowan

The Fade Away vinyl recoloring system contains everything you’ll need to successfully touch up or recolor your Chevy’s vinyl interior. Years of ultraviolet rays can fade the original color of your interior parts, but with this kit from Just Dashes, you can make them look like new. If you are changing the color of your whole interior check with the folks at Just Dashes for the amount of dye you will need. Depending on your order, your kit will contain:

• One or more quarts of vinyl dye • Rubber gloves

• Fade Away surface prep cleaner • Breathing mask

• Fade Away Vinyl Life Preserver • Self-contained sprayer

• Cleaning pads • Funnel

• Cleaning brush • Adhesion promoter (if ordered)

• Stir sticks • Detailed instructions

Begin the restoration process by examining the surface of the part to be recolored. If the surface is soft to the touch it is vinyl, if it is hard like kick panels, it is plastic.  Adhesion promoter should always be used on hard plastic items.

Both vinyl and hard surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned with surface prep cleaner and brush, and or cleaning pad, and then wiped immediately with a wet cloth to remove the dirt. The cleaner should not be allowed to dry on the surface. Clean a small area at a time using the brush for deep grain or hard to reach areas. The parts must be thoroughly dry before applying color. The item shown here is Just Dashes custom dash pad with gauge pods for the 1968-’72 Chevy truck. It is being changed from black to red to match the new interior. Vinyl dye is available in all original Chevrolet colors or in a custom color from your supplied color swatch. The dye does not need to be thinned before spraying. You can also use a conventional spray gun and compressor for really large parts.

After thoroughly mixing the contents of the can, simply fill the glass jar of the sprayer approximately 3/4-full using the funnel in the kit. Hold the sprayer 8 to 10-inches from the item and begin to spray, Just Dashes recommends the “double spray” method of spraying on two light coats at a time using a crosshatch pattern. This provides complete coverage of the part. Allow 15-minutes drying time between coats. If you have several items to color, simply line them up and move from one to the next in assembly line fashion. For recoloring in the same color, usually two coats will be enough. If you’re changing interior color, continue to add coats until the color is solid. After allowing the dye to dry for 24-hours, a coat of Vinyl Life Preserver can be added. This will protect the surface and does not attract dust.

A detailed instruction sheet is provided in the kit and you must follow the instructions to be achieve professional like results. Just Dashes recommends that your use the rubber gloves and breathing filter supplied in the kit when mixing or spraying petroleum based products. Spraying should be done in a well-ventilated dust free area, with the ideal temperature at 70 to 85-degrees. It is not recommended that you spray in direct sunlight. DASH 1

The surface of the part to be colored receives a thorough scrubbing with vinyl cleaner to remove any silicone, hand oils or other chemicals that might inhibit total dye adhesion.

A second wash and vigorous brushing is performed to remove and deep residue or dirt left from the first cleaning.

This handy sprayer will work well on small to medium sized items. If you are changing interior color, you might consider a compressor powered spray gun to cover large areas more thoroughly.

The color should be applied in light coats using a cross-hatching pattern to provide complete coverage. When changing color, like this dash pad, apply coats until the color is solid and uniform across the surface.

Here you see how completely the dye changed the color of the pad. The key is not to rush and to continue adding coats at 15-minute intervals until the color is opaque
